Here at Partners, we take a lot of pride in our outstanding therapy programs. We have exceptional programs in ABA/AVB therapy, Occupational Therapy, as well as Speech and Language Therapy. Our expertise in these three therapy areas is what helps Partners In Excellence stand out, and we’d like to take this opportunity to explain more about each of them.
ABA/AVB Therapy: Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is focused on analyzing and modifying human behavior. Applied Verbal Behavior (AVB) is an analysis of language, and is rooted in the same principles as ABA. Applied Behavior Analysis involves identifying the functional relationship between a person’s behavior and their environment, and analyzing this relationship can help us understand why they behave in a particular way. AVB, on the other hand, is specific to how language develops and the conditions in which certain verbal behaviors occur. The overall goal of ABA/AVB is to increase functional language, and decrease stereotyped and problematic behaviors within the individual. The program is non-aversive and focuses on rewarding desired positive behavior, as opposed to punishing negative, unwanted behavior.
Occupational Therapy: Occupational Therapy (OT) benefits children with autism by improving the quality of life for the individual through successful and meaningful experiences. OT programs focus in basic daily living skills and involve therapeutic use of work, self care, and play activities in order to increase independence and enhance overall development. A Child needs OT when their ability to participate in and/or perform basic tasks is affected or compromised by illness, disease, disability, or disorder (autism). Our therapy specifically addresses the areas that interfere with the child’s ability to complete daily life tasks. Occupational Therapists at Partners are using evidence-based practice to select activities that are most appropriate for each individual child, and they collaborate directly with ABA therapists to help the child practice and learn new skills in a variety of settings.
Speech and Language Therapy: Speech Therapy is a specialized therapy process that addresses communication disorders in the areas of receptive language, expressive language, speech fluency, speech production, oral motor ability, voice production and pragmatics. Our Speech Language Pathologists at are licensed by the state of Minnesota and have the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Children receiving Speech therapy services also benefit from frequent, accessible communication between behavior therapists, speech language pathologists and parents about the child’s abilities and progress. This helps to enhance carryover of skills acquired in classroom sessions at Partners as well as at home.
To summarize, our all-inclusive center-based program gives parents the confidence that they need, and the assurance that their child is being given the best possible tools for success. Children can look forward to a fun, engaging social learning environment, and parents can rest easy knowing that all of Partners’ therapists are working together to achieve optimum results.
